I have a little problem that shows up every couple of years. I do stuff in my sleep…weird stuff. I owe it to you, my readers, to let you know a few instances of my odd behavior.
Back in 2002, I went on a trip to Arizona with my youth group from my church. About 65 high school students loaded up in two coach buses and were heading for a week of spring break. To save money, we would sleep anywhere from 5 to 7 people in a hotel room. In my room, we had 5. Of course, there were only two beds in the room and I gladly chose to sleep on the floor with my sleeping back and pillow that I had brought along.
When I woke up in the morning I felt rested and refreshed. I got up an went to grab my towel to take my morning shower. But when I got to my suitcase I noticed something odd. My sleeping bag was rolled up nice and neat with my pillow tucked underneath the elastic straps. Like I mentioned earlier, I had slept on the floor in my sleeping bag and with my pillow. So, I turned around to my sleeping area and lying on the floor was the comforter from the hotel bed and one of the hotel pillows. I had no idea what had happened.
When I got out of the shower, I went and woke up my friend Seth to see if he knew what had happened. He explained how in the middle of the night he woke to me standing up in front of him, pulling the comforter off the bed. He instinctively grabbed the other end and started a tug of war. He said after a few minutes, he was no match for my sleep walking strength. Defeated he went back to sleep and apparently so did I.
Of course by this time I really confused. I didn’t remember any of this. But Seth said that was only half of the story. He explained later that night, he woke up to me pulling his pillow from underneath his head. He claimed that he tried to grab it back, but again, he was no match. With all of this unknown to me, I laid back down falling asleep for the rest of the night.
Fast forward to last Monday. Danica and I went to bed around 11PM. We both were tired and fell fast asleep. Although I have no memory of this, Danica said that I woke her up around 12:30AM looked at her and had the following conversation:
Allston: Hey Danica!
Danica: What?
Allston: Jacque-Jean! (Almost yelling)
Danica: What? What are you talking about?
Allston: Do you even know what that means?
Danica: Huh? What? No…
Allston: Thank you very much! (Then I apparently rolled over and went back to sleep)
I have no idea what Jacque-Jean means or why I said it. I must have been having dream or something. I guess the point is that I’m weird…especially in my sleep.
