My sister requested for her birthday and Christmas presents that I make her some furniture.

First, for her birthday, she requested a buffet table. This is made out of whitewood pine with a dark kona stain.

Then for Christmas she requested a pallet wood dining room table. The table received only a matte polyurethane finish, with no stain. We think it turned out pretty cool.

By the way, my sister is pretty cool. You should check out her blog here.

Here are a few recent projects that have keep me busy.

First was a end table for the living room. This is made out of solid quarter sawn white oak with a dark walnut stain.

Next I made two night stands for the master bedroom. These are made out of solid mahogany. I used a oil based red mahogany stain.

After a summer of building and selling dining room tables for various people, it was time to make a table for our house.

The previous tables I made were out of solid, southern yellow pine. Now, there is nothing wrong with southern yellow pine, however for our own table, I decided to go with a higher quality hardwood. This table is made out of solid mahogany [for the record, I got a really good deal on the mahogany ;) ).

First came the framing.

Then the sanding.

Finally, a very dark kona stain with 4 coats of high gloss polyurethane.

Luckily, I finished in time for the wife to decorate for Christmas.

We are really please with the way it turned out and look forward to many dinners on to it for years to come.

Renovation Realities VIII

I’ve been working out in the garage quite a bit over the past few months.

During the summer, my wife asked me to build her a rustic style dining room table. In fact, at the time, I even made a blog entry about it. That table sat in our dining room for about 2 weeks before we listed it on Craig’s List. Surprisingly, there was a fair amount of interest. We sold that table, and shortly took an order for me to build a new one. As the summer progressed, I sold about 10 of these. Below is an assortment of the tables I sold.

All of the tables pictured are made of southern yellow pine.

Depending on the request of the buyer, I would finish the table differently. I sanded some more than others, while others received lighter, or darker stain. The stain pictured is called kona.

Some buyers requested different lengths. The table below was for a family from my church. They requested it to be 10′ long! I also built them two benches to match. The size of this table made a significant challenge for a one man job. Thanks to my wife for help me lug it around!

This table was requested to have a red mahogany stain.

Eventually, buyers were asking me to create brand new designs. After many emails back and forth with a buyer, I developed and built the table below. We called it the chunky table.

The nice part for the buyers was being able to have a solid wood, custom built table for an affordable price. The person who bought this table had a small dining space and only needed a 4′ long table. She was really pleased how it turned out.

Eventually, I was receiving so many orders, I couldn’t keep up!

As it turned out, I removed my posting from Craig’s List. Along with a few other projects around the house, I wanted to work on a mahagony dining room table for our house.

When time allows, I plan on building and selling a few more of these tables. This was a fun experience which introduced me to a new hobby. Stay tuned as I plan on posting about other woodworking projects I’ve completed.

And as always, let me know what you think.
